Thursday: Be Aware

“Practice self-awareness, self-evaluation, and self-improvement. If we are aware that our manners - language, behaviour, and actions - are measured against our values and principles, we are able to more easily embody the philosophy: leadership is a matter of how to be, not how to do”, Frances Hesselbein

Today’s top tip is how to BE AWARE in your new roles. This is undoubtedly a very different environment to what you’re used to. It is important to understand how you fit in. Be aware of your role. What are your responsibilities? What are the expectations placed on you by your manager and the business in these first few months? Ask for feedback and communicate openly about your experiences so far. You can create self-awareness by having these conversations and reflecting on your journey.

Be aware of your new environment. How are you interacting with your new colleagues? Are you investing time getting to know them? Are you conducting yourself professionally? Remember, everyone has something to give so think about growing your personal network. Leverage those relationships to deepen your learning.

Finally, be aware of yourself. We all make mistakes, from graduate to CEO, so be mindful of what you can learn from them. Remember, ask for FEEDBACK and understand that this is an opportunity for GROWTH. Be RESILIENT and BOUNCEBACK from challenges knowing that this will help you succeed over time. As Albert Einstein said, “Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new”.

Strengths to use: Feedback, Growth, Resilience, Bounceback
