Tuesday: Be Present

“Remember then, there is only one time that is important – NOW! It is the most important time because it is the only time we have any power”, Leo Tolstoy.

You’ve graduated from university. You’ve worked hard to get to where you are. You have dreams and aspirations of what your future could look like. You’ve got your foot in the door and grand plans to steam-roll your way to the top of the ladder in record timing. Now STOP. Take a breath. Remember you have a long road ahead and a whole lot of living and learning to do in the meantime. Our second top tip is, BE PRESENT. Now that you have started being curious and taking in all that you can about your new role, environment, peers and organisation, remember to take a step back and acknowledge what has got you here. You are here to learn. You are here to develop. You are here to be the best that you can be. But with that comes dedication and an awareness of who you are and what you can do right now. You have been hired for a reason and you bring a certain set of strengths with you so nurture them and remind yourself to walk before you can run.

Don’t miss the opportunity to be present in practical terms. Whether in meetings, training or simply sharing lunch with a new colleague, keep focused, listen and pay attention.

Now is the time to think about the impact you want to make in your first few weeks. What impression do you want to give right now? Start with Day 1.
